Generative AI: Promise and limitations

Generative AI has proven remarkably effective at accelerating ideation, drafting and exploration in research and enterprise contexts. But where does its accuracy falter or its fit for purpose reach its boundaries? And what technologies can meaningfully extend it?

Bridging the gap with structured knowledge

This panel brings together thought leaders to explore how generative AI, while powerful in pattern recognition and linguistic fluency, often falls short in areas demanding precision, traceability, and contextual consistency. We will discuss how complementary technologies, particularly knowledge graphs and symbolic reasoning systems, can help bridge these gaps.

The future of hybrid AI

Join Digital Science for a forward-looking conversation on hybrid approaches that combine the creativity of large language models with the rigor of structured knowledge to enable more scalable, transparent and trustworthy business decision-making.

Digital Science are looking forward to once again exhibiting and speaking at the ISMPP European Meeting. This year’s conference theme is “Evolving with Purpose: Excellence in an Era of Efficiency”, and will explore how professionals can meet growing demands for timely, relevant, and accessible medical communications without compromising quality or ethics.

Visit us at Booth #1 to discover how Digital Science products can enhance your publication strategy for greater efficiency and impact. Mike Taylor, Head of Data Insights at Digital Science will also be presenting a parallel session alongside Bhatia Radika, Global Head of Scientific Communication Excellence at UCB.

From Metrics to Meaning: Using Advanced Analytics to Evaluate Scientific Exchange

09:55 – 10:40, Wednesday 28 January 2026

Measuring the impact of scientific exchange offers significant benefits for pharmaceutical companies, yet many remain in the dark because their content is not designed for performance tracking at the point of publication. Without the right infrastructure, it is difficult to assess whether materials truly resonate with key stakeholders or contribute to meaningful scientific exchange.

Advanced analytics now make it possible to go far beyond traditional metrics, providing insights into how scientific content is consumed, shared, and perceived across audiences. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs are a crucial enabler of this process, allowing content to be linked with stakeholder-specific engagement data, sentiment signals, and usage patterns that reveal a fuller picture of communication impact.

This workshop will introduce participants to the possibilities of advanced analytics in scientific exchange. Through case-based examples, the session will explore how metrics such as audience segmentation (clinicians, policymakers, patients), sentiment analysis, and geographic reach can illuminate patterns of engagement. Participants will also discuss how to integrate these methods into strategy and planning at different points in the product lifecycle – from launch preparation through to ongoing evaluation of stakeholder engagement.

By the end, attendees will have practical knowledge of how to set up content for tracking and apply advanced data-driven insights, with DOI tagging highlighted as a key step to unlocking these capabilities.

Objectives

  • Understand the role of advanced analytics in scientific exchange – Gain awareness of how persistent identifiers such as DOIs enable deeper measurement of engagement, sentiment, and reach across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Apply metrics across the product lifecycle – Learn how to integrate content performance tracking into pre-launch planning, peri-launch execution, and post-launch evaluation to inform strategy and optimize engagement.
  • Critically assess and apply insights – Develop the ability to distinguish between data that generates actionable improvements in content strategy versus metrics that add noise, and explore best practices for using analytics to align scientific content with HCP and patient needs.

Meet our speaker

Mike Taylor

Mike is Head of Data Insights at Digital Science, where he works with publishers and research enterprises to understand the impact of their journals and research.

Mike is an innovator in scholarly metrics and social impact. Prior to the development of altmetrics, he was working to understand how researchers were using emerging social media networks and other platforms to exchange information. Mike has conducted much research and has published papers and presentations on altmetrics and other forms of impact. He is working towards a PhD with Mike Thelwall at Wolverhampton University on Open Access publishing and social impact.

He has been involved in many open initiatives during his career, most notably contributing to the architecture of the Orcid repository and API prior to its launch during his time at Elsevier Labs.
